ABOUT

Dan Giannopoulos (b. 1980, London) is a multi-skilled British/Greek photographer, film-maker and writer, whose work explores the lives of individuals and communities who exist on the outer edges of contemporary society; whether by their own volition or due to social, political and environmental forces beyond their control. His work has been published and exhibited widely and has been recognised by numerous international awards and grants.

Beginning his early career in the film industry, working on VFX for major blockbuster movies in the late 90’s; including ‘007 The World is Not Enough’ and ‘Lost In Space’. He then segued into a career in photography during an extended period of exploration and self development. To date he has travelled to, and worked in, close to 70 countries.

In 2009 he gained a 1st Class Honours Degree in photojournalism at the London College of Communication and studied under the tutorship of respected British social documentary photographer Homer Sykes, who played a major role in guiding Dan in refining his practice.

After graduation he spent a few years working as a press photographer, mostly covering live music for publications such as NME, RockSound and Metal Hammer, in addition to snapping red carpet events for daily newspapers. However his focus soon shifted towards developing more long-form projects that would investigate diverse issues such as healthcare for the elderly, the ongoing global economic crisis, fringe motorsports in the UK and the impact of gang-violence in El Salvador. In all cases Dan’s work is driven by a fundamental urge to educate himself and challenge his understanding of some of society’s under-reported issues and by extension challenge the views of those that see his work.

Outside of photography Dan is an accomplished Freediver as well as a qualified PADI Divemaster professional with 300+ dives under his 6lb - 10lb weighted belt.
